UK / International Connections
Currently, there are no direct flights from UK to Puerto Rico - so you’ll need to make a connection. If you’ve never done this before, don’t worry - it’s very common in the US. From a route perspective, there’s no clear ‘winning’ route, much of it comes down to personal preference.
The US routes can often provide more transfer flexibility & can also work out cheaper if you book separately - but you might need to book two separate tickets & search outside of tools like ‘Skyscanner’ to get the best deals.

Immigration
Puerto Rico is not a U.S. State, however it is part of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) system so if you’re not a US Passport Holder or US Permanent Resident - you will need a valid visa (usually an ESTA) to clear US Customs. Please see the FAQ section below for further info on that process.
Arriving via Madrid - You will clear customs in Puerto Rico.
Arriving via NYC / Miami - You will clear customs at your point of entry into the US - before you transfer to Puerto Rico. Make sure you allow time for this (don’t schedule a connection within an hour of landing) a 2 or 3-hour gap between landing & take-off is a good rule of thumb.
